About Alan Richards, MD

A pioneer of pediatric ophthalmology in the state of Louisiana, Alan Richards, MD, has established a distinguished medical career that spans more than 30 years. Alan Richards, MD, studied pre-medicine at Rice University and Southern Methodist University before enrolling at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1975, he embarked upon five years of postgraduate training. He completed an internship in straight medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Texas, a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, and ultimately a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the Philadelphia-based Wills Eye Hospital.

Upon completing his training, Alan Richards, MD, launched a pediatric ophthalmology practice in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1980, becoming the first practitioner of his kind in the state. Since then, Dr. Richards has acquired considerable expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of pediatric eye conditions, including genetic disorders and complex misalignments of the eye (otherwise known as strabismus). He has also developed a specialty in treating eye muscle disorders affecting adult patients.

Today, Dr. Richards practices ophthalmology at the Highland Clinic and the private practice Richards & Hinrichsen, both of which are based in Shreveport. He also serves on the faculty of Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center, where he teaches pediatric residents as well as medical and neonatal nursing students as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology.
